Duvets and pillows buying guide

When it comes to duvets, we know what we’re talking about. Because it was Habitat that brought duvets - then called the ‘Continental Quilt’ - to Britain’s masses after its founder Terence Conran slept under one in Sweden.

As you spend approximately a third of your life sleeping, we believe it’s nothing short of essential that your duvets and pillows make you feel superbly comfortable and supremely calm.

Of course, choosing a duvet or pillow is down to personal preference – unlike the rest of the Habitat range, this is one area that isn’t about style! However, our advice is to shop these items as you would a good coat: they’re going to be with you a long time, so go with the best you can afford.

You may be looking for guest bedding, spare bed pillows, kids quilts, or a loftily luxurious super king duvet for yourself. Whatever it is, use this Habitat Duvets and Pillows Guide to work out what to lay your head on and what to wrap yourself in.

What are the different types of duvet fillings?

Our duvets and pillows are available in a variety of fillings, either natural or synthetic.

Whichever you choose, you can rest assured that all our bedding is made with high quality fillings and covers to ensure durability and comfort over time.

What are natural-filled duvets and why choose them?

Natural-filled duvets are filled with feathers and/or down.

Habitat's Duck Feather duvet range offers weight with warmth, while our Platinum Down duvet line is the luxurious choice, combining superior warmth with the lightness of down.

Both naturally durable and a worthwhile investment.

What are synthetic duvets and why choose them?

Synthetic duvets are constructed of manmade fibres. Our synthetic ranges include Peach Skin and Ultrawashable.

These are perfect for those who want to wash their bedding regularly. They’re also a good option for those with allergies.

The Ultrawashable range has been created specifically with this in mind. Both its pillows and duvet are made with an advanced microfibre fill that can be washed in a domestic washing machine at 60 degrees – the temperature that kills dust mites.

What is the ‘tog’ of a duvet and which do I need?

‘Tog’ refers to the thermal resistance and warmth of a duvet – the higher the tog, the warmer the duvet. The tog values of Habitat’s duvets break down as follows:

  • 4.5 tog – lightweight summer duvet
  • 10.5 tog – spring/autumn duvet
  • 13.5 tog – combination ‘trio’ duvet made up of a 4.5 tog and a 9.0 tog duvet that can be used separately for the warmer seasons and then clipped together to make a very warm 13.5 duvet for the winter months

The below chart provides the full spectrum of togs available.

LIGHTWEIGHT SUMMER SPRING/AUTUMN COMBINATION 'TRIO'
Peach Skin 10.5 tog
Ultrawashable 4.5 tog 10.5 tog 13.5 tog (9 + 4.5 tog)
Duck Feather 10.5 tog 13.5 tog (9 + 4.5 tog)
Platinum Down 10.5 tog

The weight per square metre of most duvets lies within the range of 350g to 1000g.

This is bedding that is filled with synthetic filling rather than feathers. Because it is washable at 60 degrees, the temperature that kills dust mites, it is a good option for allergy sufferers, who can be irritated by these microscopic household pests.

Habitat’s Peach Skin duvets and Ultrawashable duvet and pillow ranges are both anti-allergy.

Do I need mattress and pillow protectors?

What are the standard bedding sizes?

At the moment, all of our sheets and bedding sets adhere to European sizing, which is ever so slightly different to the UK standard. But to make things easier all around, we’ve now decided to change everything – that means beds, mattresses and bedding – to the UK standard. To ease through the transition, we’ll carry both sizes – confusing, we know! – so please make sure you check individual products for sizing details.

How do you care for bedding and pillows?

Our Ultrawashable and Peach Skin range are both washable in a domestic machine, making them perfect for those who regularly launder their bedding, or for allergy sufferers.

We recommend our natural feather and down duvets are professionally laundered to ensure they’re dried thoroughly.

Please refer to the individual product for specific wash and care instructions.
