New Designers 2008
3-13 July
Habitat is very proud to sponsor New Designers 2008 held at the London Design Business Centre in Islington this July. Open to all UK universities this inspiring exhibition provides an opportunity for talented design graduates to showcase their work to the industry, public and media.
Habitat is thrilled to offer support and encouragement to talented graduates from all design disciplines. New Designers will provide a chance for the emerging young designers to get their work seen and the opportunity for them to gain valuable advice from the experts. Habitat will sponsor the Furniture Zone (showcased in part 2), and have created two awards, one for each part of the exhibition. The Habitat Innovation Award will look across all design disciplines from textiles to furniture, awarding each winner with a 3 month placement experience with the Habitat design team. In addition, Habitat will look at the possibility of turning the 2 winning designs into manufacturable and marketable products. The judging panel will include Habitat’s Head of Design, Theo Williams as well as other key designers within the Habitat design team. Habitat will be looking for products that show innovation, originality and creativity. Theo Williams said: “I am thrilled to be able to offer the winners a placement within the design team, enabling them to gain strong overall experience focusing on what it takes to bring a design to fruition. New designers are providing a great opportunity for young designers to showcase their work. At Habitat our passion for innovative design makes us absolutely committed to supporting emerging talent. Through New Designers we have discovered some of the key members of our design team, including Bethan Gray and James Harrison, who will be a part of the judging panel this year. It’s an inspiring and exciting event that we are proud to be supporting.” Bethan Gray was discovered by Habitat in 1998 and has been a permanent member of the Habitat in-house design team since 2001, accumulating many awards and acknowledgements over the years. In 2005, it was Bethan that noticed James Harrison’s “Rocker” chair. The chair was taken on by Habitat to produce and launched with the Autumn-Winter 2007 collection. James Harrison was also offered a position within the Habitat in-house design team and in 2007 won the Elle Decoration Young Designer Award.New Designers: Part 1: 3-6th July/Awards Preview 2nd July
