What are the different types of shades?

Ceiling shades

Our ceiling shades are used as a pendant solution and can be easily attached to your existing electrical cable. If you’re using an existing fitting such as a bayonet or E14 screw fitting, then all our shades come supplied with a reducer ring – they’ll fit with any fitting, new or existing. We sell a variety of ceiling shade fittings called Pendel – these come as singles or as multiple drop, and one even comes with a plug, so you can be as creative as you like.

Choosing the right lamp shade

Designed to diffuse the glare of a naked bulb, lamp shades are available in a wide range of colours, fabrics and styles. Switching out your old lamp shade for a new one is an easy, simple way to spice up your existing décor.

Firstly, think about the function and light output you desire. For example, you may want a floor lamp to create an ambient glow that softly illuminates darker corners of your home, in which case a drum shade is the best option.

Likewise, if you’re selecting a ceiling shade, consider its main function first, then its output. For example, if you want to showcase a decorative bulb use an open ceiling shade. If you want to make a style statement, go for a metallic interior which looks great when seen from below. And if you want to create a decorative pattern on your ceiling, choose a wooden ceiling shade that makes a striking feature finish.

Our selection of subtle hues, bright pops and plain shades will complement any interior but think about the colour and style of the room first and decide whether you want the shade to stand out or blend in with your surroundings. Darker shades will create moody, atmospheric lighting in your home whilst lighter shades will allow light to filter through.

Lastly, don’t forget scale: you may want to make a statement but make sure you measure your space as some floor shades have a large footprint. We’ve got silk, French velvet and linen shades all in various sizes that will complement your interior.

What are they made from?

Our lamp shades come in cotton, plastic, real silk, linen and French velvet. Our ceiling shades are available in a huge variety to suit all tastes – wood, glass, paper and metal, to name but a few.

How do you care for lamp shades?

Dust lightly with a clean, dry cloth – and always turn off the light at the mains first. Specific care instructions can be found on the individual product pages.
