Bedroom furniture buying guide

A bedroom is our sanctuary - it's a private place in the home where we relax and unwind with our nearest and dearest, and of course, get some shut-eye. A good night's sleep aids brain function, generally helps with good mood and even slows down aging - there's a reason it's called beauty sleep, after all. That's why it's crucial to get the right look and feel for this sacred space, depending on what colours, materials and mood make you feel most at home.

While mattresses and beds last a good few years, bed linen and soft furnishings have a slightly shorter lifespan. The upshot is that every so often you can refresh your space with new cushions, throws, sheets or a duvet - even the smallest change can brighten up a room.

So lie back and get comfy as we walk you through the process of planning the perfect bedroom. Spoiled for choice after reading our Bedroom Furniture buying guide? Feel free to pop in-store and have a chat through your ideas.

You're only a few steps away from your dream space ...

Once you've worked out the big decisions like which bed, mattress and storage works for the dimensions of the space, it's time to layer with texture, colour and all the details that make a bedroom comfy and cosy.

Are you going to be sharing your bedroom with a partner? Are children likely to making themselves at home there? These questions are worth considering when it comes to storage and colour scheme, and of course the size of the bed itself.

Everyone needs a little inspiration; have a flick through your favourite interiors magazines or do a bit of online research to find examples of your ideal look.

Pieces you'll need:

Bed: Will it be single, double, king size, kids?

Mattress: Foam or pocket sprung? Size and firmness?

Pillows & duvets: What size, how soft and what filling?

Storage: Do you need a chest of drawers, wardrobe, trunk, bedside table or all of the above?

Accessories: Do you need a dressing table, mirror or any underbed storage?

Upholstery: Do you have enough extra space for a sofa or sofa bed, chaise longue or armchair?

Soft furnishings: Which throws, cushions, rugs and window dressings do you need to finish off the look?

Understated or statement?

Deciding on the overall look and feel of your room can be tricky, but once you have decided on a colour scheme and the all-important budget, the fun can really begin. Now, which look suits your fancy?

Soften the room by adding muted tones to the walls, bold gold accessories and sleek, sliding mirrored wardrobes. An upholstered bed will also add to this luxurious look.

Key pieces

Measure your space carefully as a headboard or under bed storage will add to the amount of room you need for your chosen bed. For more details, see our Bed Buying Guide.

While memory foam is the most popular because it moulds to your body shape, there are lots of great pocket spring mattresses that also offer great support and comfort. It is always best to try before you buy (with your partner, or family) to see if it has the right firmness for you. For more guidance on buying the right mattress, see our Mattress Buying Guide.

Habitat offers a wide range of wardrobes, chest of drawers, bedside tables, and dressing tables. You can shop a collection or mix and match to create a modern, eclectic look. For a quick and easy storage solution we also have sliding wardrobes that are made to order in a variety of specs.

Once you have established the look you are going for, you can choose from our wide selection of high gloss finishes, or solid timber such as oak or walnut, or go for a mix of materials to create a classic design look.

Depending on the size of your bedroom, it could be nice to have a fabric chaise longue or armchair for reading and putting your feet up - especially if you like to reserve the bed for sleeping. A sofa or sofa bed offers the same solution, as well as being handy for extra houseguests. See our Sofa Buying Guide and Sofa Bed Buying Guide for more info and check each sofa to see the wide variety of fabrics, colours and sizes available.

Duvets and pillows

As we've said before, this is one area that isn't about style. We consider ourselves experts in duvets since we were the first to sell them to the British masses all those decades ago. Our pillows come with a choice of natural or synthetic fillings and two different sizes. Our Duvets & Pillows Buying Guide will help you sort out your togs from your filling.

Soft furnishings

If you've opted for neutrals, you might like to add a punch of personality with cushions or a brightly coloured rug.  Likewise, if the bed you've chosen is a slick lacquer or metal, try adding scrummy layers of wool, cotton or silk bedding and throws to warm up the room. Much of our linen is reversible, making it easy to change up your look and mix and match the finishing touches. Our Bedding Buying Guide and Rug Buying Guide can help you decide.

Good lighting can make your bedroom a true haven; it's one of the most important elements to get right because it helps you read and relax, but is also one of the easy ways to inject a bit of personality. Make sure to choose fixtures that give off soft, ambient light that doesn't jar, as well as focused wall or spotlights for bedside reading. Refer to our Lighting Buying Guide for help choosing the right one.

Keeping tidy

All of our wooden beds can be easily dusted and our upholstered beds can be vacuumed or brushed gently clean.

The majority of Habitat mattresses have covers that can be unzipped and dry-cleaned. Dust needs to be removed with a vacuum cleaner, while liquid spills should be mopped up with an absorbent cloth or paper towel. We recommend turning your mattress to keep the shape. Quality guarantee Most of our mattresses carry a five to eight year guarantee, check each individual mattress to see which one applies. With quality guaranteed this should definitely help you get a great nights sleep.

Our various storage pieces should be vacuumed or cleaned with a damp cloth.

The safest option is to have your upholstered items professionally cleaned, but they can also be brushed and vacuumed.

Soft furnishings

Always look closely at the care instructions, but the majority of our bed linen can be washed at 40 degrees and follow up by a 2 dot iron.

Cushion covers and pillow- cases can be tossed into the washing machine too.

Yes - a wide variety in fact! Take a look at our Mattress Buying Guide - this can be supplemented by our instore staff or over the phone with Customer Services on 0344 499 4686.

Ranging from open coil, pocket sprung to memory foam mattresses, we have a fabulous selection to choose from. Many of our beds will also be part of a range that includes other pieces of bedroom furniture, so you can coordinate your bed with your wardrobe, chest of drawers and side tables.

Our wooden and metal beds prefer to be dusted clean, and favour a damp cloth for removing spillages, while a vacuum is an upholstered bed's best friend, combined with a dry cloth to blot spillages. Leather beds can be wiped with a damp cloth and dried - treating the leather to a facial every once in a while with our Leather care kit will keep it in top condition.

Habitat's mattress protectors are made of a machine-washable polycotton cover filled with 100% polyester wadding, quilted for comfort. The skirt is elasticated for easy, secure fitting.
