Assembly is required. The shelf is only intended to be on the left side (as you face it).

It's a flat pack. If you're handy I suppose you could fit the shelf on the other side but you'd have to precisely drill etc. or even put in supports, then you'd have the holes showing from where it should be as it's all pre-drilled for easy assembly.
In my opinion don't mess with it. It fits together really well and easily and makes for a sturdy unit.
