Freddie Harrel. Here’s a girl we want to know. Fashion blogger, stylist, confidence maker, feminist. Freddie wears many hats and she’s quite happy about that. Meet Freddie, the latest snoop on #HabitatVoyeur.
Hi Freddie, tell us a little bit about yourself.
I blog about fashion and confidence, I am a confidence consultant and recently launched the SHE Unleashed Workshop which aims to encourage women to explore and bring out their inner characters they don’t even know they’re made of. I do style and confidence videos, host events and panels and I’m about to launch a hair business.
Where do you live?
In Walworth, south-east London with my husband, Tom.
How did you find the place?
We used to live in an old orphanage, so we fell in love with double-height ceilings and mezzanines. When we had to leave our former flat, we knew we wanted another loft.
Did it feel right immediately?
It didn’t at all! It already had some furniture and they [the owners] didn’t want to store them so we had to hide some of them, and incorporate the rest in our décor. Now it works perfectly, but the flat can get cold so it took us a bit of time to warm to it.
How have you made this house your home?
Definitely! It’s the perfect mix of us; we have so much fun tweaking little details and shopping for quirky things. Recently we bought lots of plants and scattered them around the flat, I absolutely love it!
How did you shape it – and how did it shape you?
I think we have different atmospheres. Upstairs is very cosy and is like a little boudoir. But it’s also my office so it needs to feel very creative, and I have this huge open closet which adds to the cosy feel. Downstairs is the grown up space, with the living room and the dinner table. But we’re not really grown-ups so we tend to hang upstairs more (and it’s warmer). I guess downstairs is more romantic, this is where we cuddle-up and watch movies, or have a romantic dinner. Upstairs is more grab a beer and let’s catch up!
What’s traveled with you from previous homes to this?
Tom owned the wooden table and the newspaper covered chairs before I met him, they set the tone of our first flat together! It definitely made us want more quirky things in our home.
The wardrobe we got from our honeymoon in Bali! It’s beautiful and very, very well carved. We love the idea that our children will play hide and seek in it someday; it might even take them to Narnia, it’s that deep!
Where’s the heart of this house?
Our bedroom! In the winter, this is where we spend most of our time!
And the head?
My office I guess.
If you could re-live one moment in this house what would it be?
The night before my hen do, we had a slumber party with my best friends. We all had these ridiculous PJs, we made homemade cocktails (the extra strong kind), sang, danced and chatted ‘til the early hours!
Are you done yet? Is this your perfect habitat?
I think your habitat evolves with you, with how you feel, with the seasons, so we’ll always be tweaking things, getting rid of some, getting new ones, etc.
What exciting projects have you been working on lately?
The launch of the SHE Unleashed Workshop. It’s such an exciting project, I love working with women. I really think that we are limitless and all extremely talented, but we tend to not know what to do with the pot of gold we sit on!
What inspires you to do what you do.
Life is too short!! I have things to say, tricks to show, in this short time I want to meet as many inspiring and beautiful human beings as possible, explore the beauty of life and its different walks. I really believe that we’re all made of several unique characters, it’s a beautiful journey to explore them and give them all air time. Which is the reason why I love doing so many things all at once. The possibilities are endless.
Any quick tips on improving your confidence/life
Don’t compare yourself to other people. It’s a waste of time, it always hurts and it’s actually pointless. We’re all this unique blend of characters, there’s no baseline for comparison. Instead, explore and celebrate who you are, your quirks, your creativity, everything.
Are you a Habitat Voyeur?
What does Habitat mean to you?
Do you have any memories of the Habitat brand specifically?
So many things with wooden legs! I absolutely love this and always have.
What Habitat products are your favourites?
Everything really. But I love the rugs, the cushions and the vases because they always have brilliant patterns.
