As we’re spending most of our lives at the moment at home, in the same environment, it can become very hard to completely switch off at the end of the day. Which is why now, more than ever, we need to look after ourselves. From calming colours to sumptuously soft towels, here’s our guide to feeling more zen at home. Pass the fluffy robe!

1. Go calm with colour

Did you know that a room’s colour can massively impact your overall mood? In order to create a calming environment, you’ll want to make sure you choose colours that are relaxing to the eye – read our expert guide here. While whites and off-whites can create a sense of cleanliness and purity in your space, harsh white walls can sometimes feel cold, impersonal and slightly clinical. So if you do want to stick to a neutral colour palette, it’s worth considering adding a few pops of colours through cushions, accessories and artwork. Alternatively, lighter colours such as pale greens, blues and lilacs can help to promote a sense of calm, wellbeing and relaxation in your room, as well as visually expanding your space. If you’re feeling daring, opts for dark walls and velvet accents to make your space feel cosy and enveloping – it’s totally up to you.

2. Get the glow

Mood lighting is one of the easiest ways to create a relaxed atmosphere in your home. When choosing your lighting, opt for a design that can be used with a dimmer switch in the bathroom or bedroom as it can help to create a more sensual and serene ambience. Opt for soft, glowy lighting in warm metal, rounded shapes or organic tones for a cosy vibe.

3. Clear the clutter

Storage solutions for the bathroom are available in all shapes, sizes and colours and materials, and incorporate plenty of storage space in their design. Not only do they help free up space in the bathroom for toiletries and bathroom essentials, they also prevent the build up of clutter. Natural wood units are great for creating a more earthy, organic vibe in your bathroom, whilst sleek designs will create an elegant, modern look. Finishing touches include terrazzo soap holders, statement storage mirrors to truly open up your space and metal door hanging racks for placing your towel and dressing gown on.

4. Run a relaxing bath

Taking a bath after a long day is the perfect way to escape from the outside world and truly wind down. The best way to set the tone in your bathroom is by using your favourite bubble bath and treating yourself to a soothing bath bomb. Next, choose some relaxing music to play or listen to your favourite podcast to help switch your mind off from the day. Bath bridges also make a great investment – they allow you to easily read a book or watch a series on your ipad,  while also providing the perfect perch for that all important glass of wine. Before you soak in the bath, remember to light some scented candles for that spa-like vibe.

5. Invest in sumptuously soft towels

Get that spa feeling in the comfort of your own home with super fluffy towels that are all made from 100% cotton. Gentler on the skin and super absorbent, they’re exquisitely soft and will help you maintain that calming feeling for longer. From pastel tones to bright, bold tones, match with hand towels and bath mats for a sophisticated touch.

6. Create a sleep sanctuary

Maintain your relaxed mood from the bathroom to the bedroom with super soft bedding sets, feather-filled duvets and snugly throws, and we guarantee you’ll doze off in no time. When it comes to bedding, natural silk will keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night, while 100% cotton designs are luxuriously soft on the skin – make sure to choose a design and fabric that’s right for you.

Once you’re all tucked in, we recommend turning off all technology to resist the urge of checking emails, text messages and social media – trust us when we say this will help you wind down more easily. If you prefer to do something before bed, why not read a book instead of a binge-worthy series on Netflix? And remember to make your bed in the morning – not only will it help you avoid unnecessary clutter, your bed will look all the more welcoming when evening comes.

7. Pamper yourself in style

A dressing table is the ultimate indulgence spot. It’s a place where we spend a lot of our time – from styling our hair, to putting on make up and getting ready to go out – it’s also a place where we can have a little bit of ‘me time’ and pamper ourselves in privacy. From shabby chic to vintage, to contemporary, mid-century and glamorous, there’s so many styles out there to choose from that will have a positive impact on your well-being and mood. Curved shapes echo a more feminine vibe, whilst darker, rustic styles can provide a lovely contrast to lighter shades in your room. Complete the look with a luxuriously cushioned seat, scented candles and a fresh bunch of blooms.
