Snuggling up under a blanket, sipping on a hot chocolate and watching your favourite film… there’s no better feeling than getting cosy when it’s chilly outside. With that in mind, we asked Editor and all-round cosy expert, Laura Weir, to share her top tips from her book ‘Cosy’.
Whether you’re a minimalist or maximalist the idea of bringing cosiness into our homes appeals to most people I know – a home without a feeling of cosy is just a museum. But, never fear, with these top tips you can turn your home into a cosy retreat in no time.
1. TURN DOWN THE LIGHTS
The essence of being cosy is about making our surroundings as soothing as possible. My well-being definitely increases as the wattage of the room gets turned down. Choose lighting with a dimmer switch, get rid of those overhead spotlights and opt for lots of varying style of lighting to create atmosphere. A lit candle casts a subtle light and creates a gentle atmosphere of low productivity. When one is lit, it warms the heart and signals that the time has come to rest easy.

2. WRAP UP IN A THROW
I love my patchwork blanket like nothing else I have ever owned. I have cried under it, loved under it, snuggled under it and slept under it. My emotions are woven into it, and it’s never been washed, so it does actually smell of life. Having all my blankets at my fingertips is the ultimate in cosy convenience.

3. CREATE A COSY HOTSPOT
Creating an environment conductive to being cosy and switching off is key. In the same way that you light candles for a relaxing bath, finding your cosy hotspot is key. Relax every muscle in your body and close your eyes. This may lead to napping, and all the better for it.
