As Halloween approaches, it’s time to be brave and turn to the dark side. Here’s how in 5 simple steps…
The trend for dark interiors is more popular than ever, with #styleitdark building momentum on Instagram and the Scandi noir trend gracing the pages of many an interiors magazine. And it’s easy to see why. There’s nothing more intriguing than a dark and mysterious colour palette in the home. Bringing sophistication and drama in equal measures, it’s a win-win option for those seeking something a little different. From darkly painted walls to deep velvet sofas and accessories, here’s 5 ways to bring the moody interiors trend into your home.
1. PAINT IT BLACK
The easiest way to transform your room, and maybe the cheapest, is to dive straight into the deep end and paint your walls a dark, moody colour. By doing this, it will create impact when entering the room and your key statement pieces will stand out more. Top tip: remember to paint your skirting boards the same colour to make your walls look larger to the eye.
2. PLAY WITH COLOUR
Just because you’ve decided to paint your walls black, doesn’t mean you can’t use bold colours in the rest of the room. A statement velvet bed frame or colourful bed set with really pop against a dark wall. Top tip: if in doubt, choose muted tones that complement each other well so they blend into your interiors scheme effortlessly.
3. ACCESSORISE WITH METALLICS
Reflective surfaces and metallic designs always provide a great deal of contrast in a room, particularly a dark hued one. Start off small with copper or brass vases and ornaments or go all out with a striking metallic coffee table.
4. ADD MIRRORED SURFACES
Whether you decide to add a mirror, side board or table, mirrored surfaces will lift the interior of a room, making it feel bigger and reflecting light to all the right places.
5. BE BOLD WITH YOUR LIGHTING
As you’ve chosen a dark colour scheme, ensure your lighting is both stylish and practical. Use layers of lighting around the room to help illuminate those darker corners and create just the right amount of atmosphere. Top tip: add a minimalist table lamp to create a cosy vibe during colder evenings.
