The direction – rattan

Rattan is a wonderfully light and resilient material. Its ease of use has made it popular with designers since biblical times, when rattan chariots were used for hunting and in battle. With it having become a slightly neglected material, we knew there was real potential to give it a fresh, modern image.

‘Our Lyra range is designed in-house and made by skilled craftsmen in Indonesia, where most of the world’s rattan is grown,’ says Polly Dickens, Habitat’s creative director. ‘From each strand of raw rattan, the skin is peeled away and used as the weaving material, while the remaining core is steam bent to produce the structure. I love the curved shape of the sofa; its corners remind me a little of Mickey Mouse ears and never fail to make me smile.’
