Happy Pride 2019

Pride has officially started and to celebrate, we’ve teamed up with Brighton artist Lois O’Hara to celebrate it in all its rainbow glory.

Marking 50 years since the start of the LGBTQ+ movement, we’ve joined forces with Brighton artist Lois O’Hara to create a special store front to celebrate this year’s Brighton & Hove Pride Festival – see artist’s impression of what it will look like above. Celebrating the rainbow pride flag, her design will flow out from our Brighton store onto the North Street pavement outside.

Ahead of her artwork being installed onto our Brighton store front, we caught up with Lois and talked all things inspiration, Brighton and, of course, pride…

Can you tell us a little bit more about what you do for a living?

I am an Artist/Designer from Brighton and my creative practice is all about capturing the movement of an image in motion. I’m interested in the stopping of time and also love to renovate public spaces – I’ve renovated several large scale outdoor sports courts in the UK.

How would you describe your artist style?

My fluid shapes represent the movement of a game and it’s a joy to see others using and enjoying my work. I also love to use vibrant colours and truly believe that colour is power. It can promote positive thinking and encourage healthy well being.

How did you get into becoming an artist?

I studied Illustration at University but didn’t find it too helpful. There was the notion that an artist cannot make money from mural painting or public art installations etc but I wanted to prove everybody wrong.

What do you love most about living in Brighton?

I’m from Brighton and have always lived there. It’s such an open city and there’s lots of fun things going on every day here.

How did you get involved with this project for Habitat?

I contacted Habitat and was crossing my fingers that they would reply and like my work which they did!

What does Pride mean to you and why is Brighton the perfect place to celebrate Pride?

It’s great that Brighton celebrates Pride as it’s such a diverse city. I am a big supporter and attend every year.
