A meteoric rise through the fashion world, A-list BFFs and the best quiff since the Fonz. As Henry Holland collaborates with Habitat on his first interiors collection, we ask: who is Henry?
FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Henry Holland hails from a small town called Ramsbottom, just outside Manchester. At 18 he moved to the bright lights of London, graduating from the London College of Printing with a BA in Journalism. From here he moved onto teen magazines, working as a Fashion Editor. In his free time he began to make t-shirts bearing his ‘Fashion Groupies’ slogans and what started off as a ‘bit of fun’ quickly became Henry’s new career path.
THE BIG BREAK
Anyone remember a celebratory Gareth Pugh taking a bow at his catwalk show wearing a t-shirt screaming ‘Get Yer Freak on Giles Deacon’ and Giles bantering back with ‘Uhu Gareth Pugh’? Well that’s when the fashion world noticed Henry Holland. Those t-shirts resulted in Henry quitting the day job to show at London Fashion Week. A couple of years later, House of Holland was established and, 13 seasons on, the business now encompasses ready to wear, brand licensing and high street collaborations.
FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES
As Henry has never seen himself as a ‘designer’, House of Holland has grown as a collaboration. From Agyness Deyn (friends since they were 12 years old) modelling his early designs to celebrated accessories designer Katie Hillier, another long-time friend, designing his ranges, Henry has surrounded himself with the best in the business, “I’ve always thought of the business as a brand, always a ‘we’”. The House of Holland girl is cool, confident and savvy. Much like Mr Holland himself it would seem.
