Beds buying guide

A bed is one of the bigger furniture purchases for your home. Finding your perfect match demands time, energy and thought, because it's something that will live with you, relax you and support you for many years to come.

Whether for master bedrooms, spare rooms or children's rooms; in wood, metal, upholstery or leather; with or without storage - we know that the decisions can seem almost limitless.

We want to help you think through the process, so everything that might be a consideration is outlined for you in this Bed Buying Guide, including a handy checklist for making sure you haven't missed any important steps.

Is it the right time?

There's no prescribed time frame for replacing your bed, but every 7 to 8 years is a good gauge - or when your bed shows obvious signs of ageing, such as creaking, or its slats or frame are breaking.

Try it out

Once you've decided to buy a new bed, you should head straight to your nearest store to try it (with your partner if you have one) as it's the only way to know whether it'll really suit you. A good 15 minutes on the bed gives you a feel for whether its softness and support works for you. Just be sure to make a note of the measurements either online or in store, so you can double check that the room will accommodate it.

Right for you?

First and foremost: measure

You need to check and check again that the space is large enough for your new bed. Start with a measuring tape and then, if necessary, place newspaper on the floor to get a more physical idea of how much space the bed will take up, and whether you'll be able to get in and out of it comfortably. Remember that if you have a headboard, this will add to the length of the bed.

If you think you'll need additional storage, such as a drawer beneath the bed or a trunk at the end, best measure for this too. Under bed clearance depends on the frame, so make sure that your storage will comfortably fit where you intend it to go.

Will it look good?

Are you confident the bed's frame will co-ordinate with your colour scheme? Of course, we advise investing in some Habitat bedding if not - nothing like crisp, fresh sheets in soothing colours, after all.

We currently make four sizes: kids (try our Pongo + Dot models); single (perfect for adults and big kids); double (which comfortably fits most bedrooms) and king size (for extra roomy sleeping).

Take a look at the chart below to see which size suits your needs, or get in touch or visit us in store to try before you buy.

Bed size Sleeping dimensions
Kids (Dot range only) W90 x L200cm
Single W90 x L190cm
Double W135 x L190cm
Kingsize W150 x L200cm

Don't forget to also leave room for that all-important underbed clearance (if you need it!) which ranges from a height of 18cm to 26cm.

Material Look
Oak Oiled or lacquered solid oak, or oak veneer
Upholstered Cotton mix, velvet or leather
Birch Light and subtle grain detailing
Ash Strong and dense hardwood with a stained finish
Metal Sturdy metal frame

Timber is as timeless and natural as it comes, and gives you the option to style your room in a variety of ways.Upholstered beds are about colour and texture, keeping your bed centre stage in your room. Whilst metal creates a cool, contemporary look.

Bed slats

Habitat beds are fitted with durable wooden slats. There are two options here with rolled slats offering basic support.

Sprung slats come within a structured frame which is within the bed frame. This ensures that the bed is structurally stable and strong. They are easily put together, long-lasting and curve to allow more support, and arguably a better night's sleep.

Don't forget you can always update the overall look of your bed with new cushions and bedding, or a new headboard or storage.

Yes - a wide variety in fact! Take a look at our Mattress Buying Guide - this can be supplemented by our instore staff or over the phone with Customer Services on 0344 499 4686.

Ranging from open coil, pocket sprung to memory foam mattresses, we have a fabulous selection to choose from. Many of our beds will also be part of a range that includes other pieces of bedroom furniture, so you can coordinate your bed with your wardrobe, chest of drawers and side tables.

Take a look at our bedroom furniture.

Our wooden and metal beds prefer to be dusted clean, and favour a damp cloth for removing spillages, while a vacuum is an upholstered bed's best friend, combined with a dry cloth to blot spillages. Leather beds can be wiped with a damp cloth and dried - treating the leather to a facial every once in a while with our Leather care kit will keep it in top condition.

Habitat's mattress protectors are made of a machine-washable polycotton cover filled with 100% polyester wadding, quilted for comfort. The skirt is elasticated for easy, secure fitting.
